Chief Justice Martha Koome has today called for the unification of Kenya’s Higher Education Financing Model to ensure that education is free and accessible to all Kenyans. Speaking in Nairobi, CJ Koome emphasized the need to address the growing inequality in access to higher education, which she believes is perpetuated by the current tiered funding system.
“There is a bursary fund given from the taxpayer’s money to governors, women representatives, MPs through the CDF, and MCAs. How are these bursaries disbursed? Why wouldn’t you consolidate these funds and make education free for all?” CJ Koome questioned.
Her remarks come amid widespread concern over the new university funding model, which categorizes students into five bands based on family income. The model, which aims to distribute government support more equitably, has faced criticism for being complex and inadequate, particularly for middle-income families.
