ICT CS Kabogo Threatens to Shutdown Internet Over Social Media Criticism

ICT Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo has cautioned Kenyans about the misuse of social media, warning that while the government has the capacity to shut down the internet, it prefers not to exercise this option.

Kabogo highlighted recent instances where AI-generated images depicted leaders, including President William Ruto, in coffins, urging citizens to act responsibly online. "We don't want to think about switching off people because the capacity is there. Let us be responsible when using social media," he stated.

The CS stressed that freedom of expression has limits, particularly when it infringes on others' rights. To curb online abuse, the government is in talks with social media companies to establish physical offices in Kenya and enforce stricter content moderation policies.
