Meru Deputy Governor, Rev. Isaac Mutuma is set to be the next Governor after Kawira Mwangaza's impeachment.

On Tuesday, August 20, 2024, the Senate confirmed the impeachment of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, officially ending her time as the county's leader. The decision followed a decisive Senate vote, with Speaker Amason Kingi making the announcement.

Mwangaza’s removal sets off a series of constitutional processes that will now determine the future leadership of Meru County. According to Kenya’s Constitution, Deputy Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia is expected to take over as governor for the remainder of the term. The Constitution, under Article 182(3), states that if a deputy governor assumes the governorship with more than two and a half years left before the next election, they are considered to have served a full term. If both the governor and deputy governor positions are vacant, the Speaker of the county assembly acts as governor, leading to an election within sixty days.

With the Senate’s decision finalized, attention now turns to Deputy Governor M’Ethingia as he prepares to assume the role of Meru County's governor. His leadership will be closely watched, particularly his relationship with the Senate, which was instrumental in Mwangaza’s impeachment. M’Ethingia is set to serve until the next election under Article 180(1), unless he is removed from office before then.

Mutuma M’Ethingia, a Methodist Church minister, has a wealth of public service experience. He began his career as a prison officer and advanced through various roles, including serving as a Child Rights Advocate with Plan International and a Youth Representative for Habitat for Humanity in the Mount Kenya Region. He was nominated by Mwangaza to run alongside her in the 2022 General Election.

Mutuma's background includes roles as a Human Rights Officer and Inmate Rehabilitation Programme Implementer within the prison services. His qualifications include a higher diploma in forensic psychology and criminology from the Kenya Institute of Studies in Criminal Justice, and a bachelor's degree in theology from Kenya Methodist University. He is also pursuing a Master's Degree in Governance and Ethics at Mount Kenya University.
