The actor was taken into custody following a lawsuit filed by his ex-wife, Samantha Lee, on Monday, September 9, in a trial held in Fulton County, Atlanta.
Gibson, who shares one child with Lee, was previously ordered in April 2023 to pay $10,690 (approximately KES 1.6 million) in monthly child support. However, his failure to adhere to this order led to legal action from Lee, resulting in the court demanding that Gibson pay over $73,000 (around KES 10.9 million) to avoid imprisonment.

During the trial, Gibson's attorney, Tanya Mitchell Graham, submitted an appeal requesting a postponement of the actor's child support obligations, which led to his release from custody. It was revealed that Gibson had only paid $2,200 since 2022, far below the court-ordered amount.
Gibson and Lee were married in 2017 before Lee filed for divorce in 2020. Both described the separation as a pivotal moment in their lives. In addition to his daughter Soraya with Lee, Gibson has another child, Shayla, from a previous marriage with Norma Mitchell.
The ongoing legal issues highlight the actor's struggles with fulfilling his financial responsibilities towards his children, a matter that has now reached the courts for resolution.
