Chief Justice Martha Koome Faces Mounting Pressure Over Corruption Allegations
Chief Justice Martha Koome is under intense pressure to resign following escalating allegations of corruption within Kenya’s judiciary. Prominent legal figures, including former presidents of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and senior counsels, have criticized her leadership, citing widespread bribery and unethical conduct among judicial officers.
In a strong rebuttal, Chief Justice Koome has denied any personal involvement in corrupt activities, dismissing the allegations as baseless and attributing them to cyberbullying and misogyny. She has vowed to continue her duties, refusing to yield to the growing calls for her resignation.
The LSK has voiced alarm over what it describes as a resurgence of systemic corruption, warning that it threatens judicial independence and erodes public trust. The society has pointed to specific instances of alleged bribery and misconduct, calling for urgent reforms to address these issues.
Despite the criticism, Chief Justice Koome has reaffirmed her commitment to preserving the integrity of Kenya’s judiciary. She has urged her critics to reconsider their stance and reiterated her determination to remain in office amid the controversy.
