Obado to Stand Trial for Sharon Otieno Murder as Court Cites Sufficient Evidence
Former Migori Governor Okoth Obado and two others will stand trial for the 2018 abduction and murder of Sharon Otieno in Homa Bay, Kenya.
The High Court has ruled that former Migori Governor Okoth Obado and two co-accused will stand trial for the 2018 abduction and murder of university student Sharon Otieno in Homa Bay. Justice Cecilia Githua determined that the prosecution presented enough evidence for the case to proceed. The matter is scheduled for mention on February 25, 2025, for further directions.
Obado, alongside his ex-personal assistant Michael Oyamo and former Migori County Clerk Caspal Obiero, is accused of orchestrating Sharon’s abduction before she was murdered on the night of September 3, 2018, in a forest in Homa Bay County. A postmortem revealed she had been strangled, stabbed multiple times, and possibly raped. Sharon was seven months pregnant, and her unborn child also suffered stab wounds.

Justice Githua acquitted the trio of charges related to the death of Sharon’s 28-week-old fetus, ruling that prosecutors should have pursued a charge of terminating the life of an unborn child instead of murder.
The trial has featured key witness testimonies, including a police officer who detailed a failed abduction attempt targeting a crucial witness.
