Global Implications of Pope Francis’s Death on April 21, 2025

On April 21, 2025, Pope Francis passed away. He was the leader of the Catholic Church, known by many for his kind heart, humble lifestyle, and focus on helping the poor and speaking up for justice.

After his death, the Catholic Church followed special steps that have been used for centuries. First, a senior church leader called the Camerlengo, who is currently Cardinal Kevin Farrell, had to officially confirm that the pope had died. From that moment, the Church enters a period called sede vacante, which means "the seat is empty." It’s a time when there is no pope, and the Church prepares to choose a new one.

One important thing that happens is the destruction of the Fisherman’s Ring. This was a special ring worn by the pope. They scratch it badly so that no one can use it to pretend to be him or approve things in his name. It’s a sign that his time as pope has truly ended.

Until a new pope is chosen, the Camerlengo takes care of the daily running of the Vatican. Meanwhile, cardinals from around the world—only those under 80 years old—travel to Rome. They stay at a special guesthouse and then enter a very private and secret vote inside the Sistine Chapel. They keep voting until one man gets at least two-thirds of the votes. When that happens, they burn the ballots and release white smoke to tell the world that a new pope has been chosen. That’s when we hear the words “Habemus Papam,” meaning “We have a Pope.”

Pope Francis had asked for a simple funeral. He didn’t want the usual fancy coffins or to have his body raised on a platform. Instead, he was placed in one plain wooden coffin lined with zinc. Even in death, he stayed true to his message of living simply and serving others.

One big surprise was where he chose to be buried. Most popes are buried under St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. But Pope Francis asked to be laid to rest in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. He loved that church and often went there to pray.

People all over the world have been sharing their sadness. Presidents, prime ministers, and religious leaders praised him for his efforts to bring people together, protect the environment, and speak out for the poor and vulnerable. Many regular Catholics also feel a deep loss. Pope Francis wasn’t just a leader—he felt like someone who truly cared.

Now, the Church waits for a new pope. But even after his passing, Pope Francis's example and words continue to inspire people all around the world.
