“I thank God for keeping me alive,” Kenyan Student Found Alive After Two-Week Abduction Ordeal
Billy Munyiri Mwangi's harrowing experience of abduction and survival highlights the concerning rise in disappearances across Kenya. After enduring a two-week captivity filled with torment, his return is a testament to resilience and the critical need for justice.
Billy Munyiri Mwangi, a 24-year-old college student from Embu, Kenya, has been found alive after enduring a harrowing two-week abduction. He was reportedly kidnapped by four hooded men on December 21, 2024, while waiting at a barbershop in Embu town.
Mwangi returned home on January 6, 2025, at around 8:00 a.m., visibly frail but alive. His father, Gerald Karicha, expressed relief and gratitude, saying, "Our son is here, and he is okay. It was truly traumatizing, but we are putting this behind us now that he has returned."
Preliminary investigations reveal that Mwangi was tortured during his captivity, including being whipped and confined to a dark room. Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji, who has been actively involved in the case, confirmed that Mwangi is severely traumatized and is undergoing medical evaluation.
Mwangi's case is part of a troubling surge in disappearances across Kenya, with at least 13 reported in the final three months of 2024. In response, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mulele Ingonga, has instructed police to investigate these incidents and provide a detailed report.
The motive and perpetrators behind Mwangi's abduction remain unknown as investigations continue. His family and community are calling for answers and justice for the ordeal he endured.
