Kenyan Journalist Wayua Muli Claims Police Attempted Arrest After Criticizing Deputy President
Former Daily Nation editor Wayua Muli alleges police attempted to arrest her over a tweet criticizing Deputy President Kindiki, sparking discussions on press freedom in Kenya.
Former Daily Nation Senior Editor Wayua Muli has alleged that police attempted to arrest her at her residence on Sunday night following a critical tweet about Deputy President Kithure Kindiki. According to Muli, she managed to evade the arrest but revealed she had previously received threats from state agents for her outspoken critiques of the current administration.
Muli’s contentious tweet accused Deputy President Kindiki of betraying his community by supporting the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua. She further voiced concerns over what she described as a resurgence of oppressive tactics against journalists, drawing parallels to past eras of media suppression in Kenya.
This incident has reignited debates about press freedom and the safety of journalists voicing dissenting opinions in the country. Advocacy groups and citizens alike are calling for accountability and respect for free speech, a cornerstone of democratic governance.
As of now, neither Deputy President Kindiki nor law enforcement agencies have issued statements addressing Muli’s claims.
