In a significant development today, August 27, 2024, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has made startling allegations against certain individuals associated with Raila Odinga’s campaign. During Raila Odinga’s bid launch for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, which was attended by five Heads of State from the East African Community (EAC), President Museveni accused Babu Owino, a close associate of Ugandan opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, commonly known as Bobi Wine, of attempting to destabilize Uganda.

Museveni, addressing the gathering, revealed that his intelligence services had informed him of efforts by some individuals within Odinga’s camp to incite unrest in Uganda. “I am a consumer of intelligence services, and it has come to my attention that certain elements within Raila Odinga’s group are not acting in good faith. One such individual is Babu Owino, who is closely linked with Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, known as Bobi Wine,” Museveni stated.

Bobi Wine, who first gained prominence as an actor and ragga musician in the early 2000s, is now a prominent political figure. He is the Member of Parliament for Kyadondo County East Constituency and the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Uganda’s leading opposition party. A lawyer by profession, Bobi Wine has been a vocal critic of President Museveni and his government, making him a significant political adversary.

Museveni’s accusations against Owino, who is known for his association with Bobi Wine, reflect the ongoing political tensions between the Ugandan government and the opposition. As the launch event for Odinga’s AUC bid highlighted the complex political relationships in the region, Museveni’s remarks add a new dimension to the already tense political climate.

The presence of multiple Heads of State at Odinga’s event underscores its regional significance, but Museveni’s comments have sparked intense debate. As the situation develops, all eyes will be on the reactions from Odinga’s camp and the potential impact on East African political dynamics.
