Abolish Public Participation? National Assembly Minority Leader Sparks National Debate
ODM now proposes abolishing public participation in development projects, sparking debate over transparency, accountability, and national progress.
Suna East MP Junet Mohamed has stirred significant debate with his proposal to abolish public participation in government development projects, claiming that it leads to delays and hinders national progress. Speaking in Taita Taveta, he compared government decision-making to family matters where swift decisions are prioritized over consultations. Mohamed specifically cited opposition to projects such as those involving the Adani Group as examples where public input obstructed key initiatives. He contrasted Kenya's struggles with countries like Tanzania, which he argued proceed with development more efficiently.
This proposal has sparked concerns about its implications for transparency and accountability, given that public participation is enshrined in Kenya's Constitution as a vital mechanism for citizen involvement in governance and decision-making processe. While proponents of the proposal argue for streamlined processes to accelerate development, critics warn that sidelining public input could exacerbate governance issues and lead to unchecked government actions.
