Police Under Fire for Alleged Livestock Theft in Elgeyo Marakwet
Residents of Kaptagat, Elgeyo Marakwet, stormed the local police station after discovering a widow’s cow slaughtered within the premises. Two police officers were arrested amid livestock theft allegations.
Ealier Today, December 17, 2024, residents of Kaptagat in Elgeyo Marakwet County stormed Kaptagat Police Station after discovering a slaughtered cow within the station's premises. The cow belonged to a local widow, Josphine Kandie, who had reported her livestock missing earlier that day.
Upon receiving information about the slaughtered cow, irate locals gathered at the station, accusing the officers of involvement in livestock theft—a recurring issue in the area. The situation escalated as residents barricaded the Kaptagat–Eldoret road and vandalized signage leading to the police station, demanding accountability and justice.
In response, the Sub-County Police Commander and other senior officials intervened, leading to the arrest of two police officers, identified as PC Christpus Butali and PC Samuel Mbugua Njuguna. The officers were found at the scene and are suspected of being directly involved in the illegal slaughter. Allegations have surfaced that they operated a butchery at Kipkorgot Trading Centre, raising suspicions of a wider livestock theft ring.
This incident has intensified tensions between the community and law enforcement, with residents expressing betrayal by those entrusted with their protection. Investigations are ongoing to address the allegations and restore public trust.
