A South Sudanese Murder Triggers Chaos in Kenya Refugee Camp

Tension has risen in the Kalobeyei refugee camp in northwestern Kenya after a man was stabbed to death on Sunday night. The camp hosts South Sudanese refugees, and the violence has caused conflict between the Nuer and Equatorian communities.

According to John Ongoro, a representative of the Equatorian community, the victim was a 21-year-old student who had just watched a soccer match at a theater. He was attacked, robbed of his phone, and fatally stabbed. The Nuer community members began leaving their homes the next day out of fear of retaliation.

Ongoro said the victim described his attackers as two tall men before he died. He noted that the Equatorian community was not leaving the camp and there had been no confrontations yet. He called for calm while investigations are underway.

Mattie Gatwick, a Nuer representative, said they heard about the killing through rumors and insisted that no Nuer community member was involved because the attack happened far from their area. He emphasized that there has been no history of conflict between the Nuer and Equatorian communities and urged for dialogue to resolve the situation.
