Engineers Board Orders Withdrawal of Oscar Sudi’s Honorary Degree Over Title Misuse
The Engineers Board of Kenya has demanded the revocation of Oscar Sudi’s honorary degree for misuse of the "Eng." title. Explore the controversy over professional credentials and academic integrity.
The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) has directed Northwestern Christian University-Kenya to revoke the honorary doctorate recently awarded to Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi. The degree, conferred on December 21, 2024, included the prefix "Eng." before Sudi’s name, implying professional engineering credentials.
EBK clarified that under the Engineers Act, 2011, the title "Eng." is legally restricted to individuals registered as Professional or Consulting Engineers. The unauthorized use of this designation violates the law and undermines the credibility of the engineering profession.
The board has instructed the university to issue a corrected certificate omitting the title and warned of potential legal action for any future misuse.
The incident has drawn significant public attention, particularly on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Many users have applauded EBK's firm stance, highlighting the importance of protecting professional standards and academic integrity. Others criticized the university for what they see as a serious oversight, with some questioning the legitimacy of the honorary degree itself.
The controversy has sparked broader discussions about the conferment of honorary degrees and the responsibilities of institutions in safeguarding the integrity of professional titles.
