Machakos Healthcare Crisis: The Politics Behind the Machakos Doctors' Strike

The healthcare system in Machakos County is on the verge of collapse as the doctors' strike enters its 56th day. Hospitals, including the Machakos County Referral Hospital, are almost empty, with patient wards deserted and many sections closed or being renovated. Patients who need urgent care are now forced to travel to private hospitals or seek treatment in neighboring counties.

The strike began after the county government failed to honor the National Return-to-Work Agreement, a deal meant to address earlier disputes with healthcare workers. Doctors are also frustrated by allegations that their salaries have been withheld. This has left many medical professionals unable to meet their basic needs, further fueling the standoff.

Efforts to resolve the crisis have been minimal, with the county administration showing little interest in meaningful negotiations. Governor Wavinya Ndeti has taken a firm stance, reiterating that salaries will not be paid for work not done and citing financial constraints as a significant hurdle. According to the Governor, the health sector already consumes more than half of the county’s wage bill, making additional salary increments unsustainable.

While the county has invested in new facilities and equipment to improve healthcare, these measures have failed to address the root causes of the strike.

The prolonged strike has disrupted essential healthcare services, endangering thousands of lives. Patients, especially those in critical condition, are bearing the brunt of the crisis. Many now face higher costs and travel burdens to access healthcare services elsewhere.

The situation demands urgent intervention from national and county authorities. Without immediate action, Machakos County risks a complete collapse of its healthcare system, leaving its residents without access to critical medical care.

As the crisis deepens, it underscores the need for sustainable solutions to address grievances in the health sector, ensuring both worker satisfaction and uninterrupted service delivery for the public.
